One new swine flu death in Oklahoma

http://www.joplinglobe.com/local/local_story_345092907.html

I have been following the news concerning the Swine Flu, this is the newest information that I have found. The Joplin Globe has reported another death related to the Swine Flu in Oklahoma City, Bringing the total within the state to 36. I did a little more research on this and have found that the CDC has indicated that this flu has primarily been affecting the young, under the age of 65, and totals 47 million nation wide. That is 1 in 6. The CDC has also stated that between the months of April and November, 98,020 have died from the Swine Flu. The numbers that are in this blog, from the CDC are not out of this article, they are off the National News.
This is upsetting to me. For the simple reason that the government is still trying to play down the affects of this flu, they are trying to make people believe that it is not as serious as it really is. Why tell people not to worry. When you tell people to not worry, they blow off the vaccination, they do not do what is needed to protect themselves and their families.
The reason that I feel this way, is because, the government is lying. Not just flat out, but in partials. They know just how serious this flu is, they know that we have not hit the big flu peak and they know that these numbers will get worse before they get better. Why not just be honest and tell the people that this is serious. That they need to be prepared. That this flu is going to get worse, and more people are going to die.

Murder charges filed in absence of body

http://www.joplinglobe.com/local/local_story_344233449.html

Duane E. Wahl, 33, now has another charge to add to his rap sheet, first-degree murder. He is being charged in connection to the disappearance of his, now former room mate, 37 year-old Richard Davis. The body of Richard Davis' body has yet to be found. This charge, according to the Crawford County District Court, stems from DNA evidence that was found inside of the home in Mulberry Kansas.
Now there are a lot of contradictions in this article that really bother me. It was stated that Davis' wife meet Duane online. That Davis and his family were residents of Tulsa when all of this started. That Davis, after his wife had been talking to Duane online and became friends, packed up his wife and children and moved in with Duane and his girlfriend in Mulberry. Duane had six counts against him, starting in 2008, for aggravated indecent liberties and criminal sodomy against children at that time, and had plead guilty to one of them already, did Davis not know about them?
Also, Duane's girlfriend stated in the article that he had held her captive inside of the home, that he had tried to poison her and she was in fear not only for her safety but also for the safety of the Davis children. She stated that she had filed a protection order against Duane and the very next day, Davis went missing. What is the connection here. There is something far more than they are saying going on here. In the interview that happened with the girlfriend, she stated that Duane just wanted to have control in his life, (like everyone else) she acted loving and upset. There was no mention of the Davis children and the wife. What happened to them? Things do not seem to tie together well. What is really going on? Something!
The reason that I feel this way is because, nothing makes any sense, there is to much that not only makes you really question things, but is a complete contradiction of sorts. I would really like to know what is not being said in this matter. There is most definitely an underlying issue or issues here.

Preschool boy’s injury leads to sex-abuse charge

http://www.joplinglobe.com/local/local_story_324223913.html

On Friday, newton County's Prosecutor filed first-degree statutory sodomy charges against Relnix Clinton, 21, of Seneca. The boy, 4 years old, complained to his mother about an injury while getting a bath. The mother of the boy called Mr. Clinton to ask what had happened, after talking to him she took her son to the hospital. After examinations were complete, the sheriff's office was called. The young boy told investigators that Clinton had promised to buy him an ice cream cone the next day, as to keep him from talking.
How on earth do you hurt a child. This story really upsets me on several levels. First of all, how does this child know this man? Was he a boyfriend of the mother? Was he a care provider? Either way, he needs to be locked up for a very long time. How sick are some people today? This type of crime is unthinkable. I sit here and watch my son play and just want to wrap him up and never let him out of the house. Children are innocent and pure, they are not able to defend themselves and it takes a very sick person to use those facts against them.
This is one of the reasons why I am a believer in the death penalty. Children are sacred and should be treated as so. They are the future of this world, why on earth do people want to hurt that and them. I can't put into words just how bad I feel for this little boy and his mother, they have a long road ahead of them. My prayers are with them.

Authorities find prescription pills in boy’s backpack

http://www.joplinglobe.com/local/local_story_324005644.html

A 15-year-old boy’s loose talk on a school bus resulted in his detention at Joplin High School on Wednesday. According to other students on the bus, the boy bragged about being in possession of prescription pills with the intent to sell them to other students at school. After a search of the backpack, numerous pills were found, including Darvocet, hydrocodone, muscle relaxers and antihistamines. Cpl. Chuck Niess stated that the juvenile has been detained and referred to the proper juvenile authorities.
Where did the boy in question get the pills? If they are proven to be from the child's parents, then what happens to the parents? Do they face some sort of consequence for not keeping their drugs locked and away from their children?
I am not sure how to comment on this, I want to be outraged that a child was found in possession of prescription drugs, but it is getting to be common. Which in itself, angers me too. I am just not sure how to comment on this article. When I first saw the heading, I thought that this would be a good article to blog on, because I would not have a shortage of things to say, and it has turned out to be quit the opposite. What is this world coming to when we cannot trust our children? I just honestly have no idea.

Woman who had 370 animals seized gets probation

http://www.joplinglobe.com/local/local_story_324091529.html

A sixty-two year old woman has been charged with 2 counts of child endangerment. This comes after 370 animals were seized from her farm outside of Pleasant Hope. It has been said that 100 of those animals were kept inside of a small mobile home, where Virginia Gambriel and her two grandchildren lived. Gambriel was originally charged with 2 counts of first-degree child endangerment but the charges were later reduced. Gambriel has been placed on two years of unsupervised probation. On Nov. 25, she will be in court to face 13 misdemeanor charges related to animal abuse and is barred from caring for any children at the home or keeping more than three animals.
How did this woman walk out of court with probation on child endangerment charges? Someone was looking out for her. Anyone else would be in jail. And, how do you possibly get 100 animals into a trailer house? Can you imagine the mess and the smell.
This article does not mention how old the grandchildren are, nor does it comment on the condition of the children either. It does comment on the condition of the animals that were found outside, why does it not comment on the children. This really upsets me. They are so worried about the abuse and neglect on the animals, that they explained their conditions in the article, but, there was nothing in the well being of the two children. Are they more concerned with the safety of the animals? They should not be. I know that animal cruelty is a big thing, and I am not for it (being a dog person), but you would think that there would of been a little more concern on the welfare of the children. Where are they, what has happened to them, why were they with their grandmother, do they have anywhere to go, are they old enough to take care of themselves and what condition were they in when they were found that lead to endangerment charges.
I feel sorry for all of the animals, but, my concern is the children. I hope wherever they are, they are safe and secure.

Arrests made in ring that sold human fat

http://www.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/americas/11/20/fat.dead.humans.peru/index.html

In Peru, authorities have arrested four members of a gang that are said to have specialized in the selling of fat off of dead humans. On Wednesday, the nation's attorney general stated that they are investigating the disappearance of at least 60 people that they believe may have been killed by this gang in several states in Peru. Four suspects have been charged with murder, while two of those four, were arrested leaving a transport building with a plastic container full of human fat. It is being said that the fat was being sold in Europe as well as Peru, and was being used for commercial purposes.
What is wrong with this picture. I had no idea that human fat was even valuable. YUCK! What would make someone kill for the fat of another, and why would make someone else pay for that fat? This is disturbing on so many levels. I know that people will kill for a lot of things, some for nothing more than laughs, but to take someones life for this.
I do not believe that violence is a good thing, let alone murder. I mean, I do understand wars and things of that nature, but to just commit murder for no other reason than just to do it. Part of me thinks that maybe it is time to reinstall the open firing line, the one that takes place in town square, in public view. I am a true believer in the death penalty, and also do believe that everyone who takes a life, for no reason, should in turn lose theirs. I think that it is time to make it public, to an extent, we need to put the fear back into the consequences of breaking the law.
People should not have to fear other people, and the fact that it is getting harder to trust your neighbors is ridiculous.

Suspect in chainsaw attack sent to Mental Health

http://www.joplinglobe.com/local/local_story_314115008.html

During a pre-trial hearing on Monday, Callaway County Judge, Kevin Crane, sentenced a suspect to the Mental Health Department of Missouri. On Jan. 19,2008, a man (Watkins) walked into a homeless shelter and started attacking the people inside with a chainsaw. It is said that Matthew J. Watkins was helping to prepare the New Life Evangelistic Center's annual peace festival. Watkins was charged with four counts of first degree felony assault and four counts of felony armed criminal action. The prosecution agreed to a plea of not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect. Crane ruled that Watkins was not guilty of the criminal charges against him, but, as mentioned above, is now in the custody of Missouri's Mental Health Department.
Why would someone not notice that a volunteer walks in to help with a chainsaw in his hand. I am not clear whether the homeless shelter was part of the church, but I assume so. I am not sure how to comment on this article, it is leaving me at an almost loss for words. What keeps coming to mind is stupid, stupid, stupid. What is going on lately? Have we just gotten so used to this sort of thing that it doesn't shock us anymore. It should! It should shock our pants right off, but it's not, and that is sad.
I am not sure why I am feeling this way. Normally this would really bother me, and instead it has left me with an extreme loss of words. There has been so much violence in the news, and not only lately, it has progressively getting worse. What are people and this country coming to? A homeless shelter is supposed to be a safe place for people to go. Churches are supposed to be safe also. What is going to happen,( well I guess that it is already happening) when churches and shelters are no longer safe. What will we do to provide safety and shelter then. Will we open our homes and hearts, or will we all continue to turn a blind eye?
My prayers are with the employees that were injured and their families. May their spirits not be broken and their hearts remain open.

Springfield family upset with mistaken bond raid

http://www.joplinglobe.com/local/local_story_313103024.html?keyword=topstory

Springfield police are now having to investigate why a bond raid was done on the wrong house, stunning a couple (Allen and Roberta Cox) and there three children. It is stated that the bail bonds agents were dressed like the swat team. They stormed the house with guns drawn, demanding the whereabouts of Andrew J. Hegger. Andrew J. Hegger had escaped from a Eureka jail while he was waiting for trial on DWI charges. The Coxes stated that not only were the agents guns pointed at there children, but Allen Cox is seeking medical attention for a possible fractured rib.
I would like to know how something like this happens. I understand going in to get the suspect, but don't you think that the agents involved would have made a positive identification of some sort before they raided the wrong home, scared the wrong children and hurt the wrong man. I would be pressing some major charges if I were the one in that position.
The reason that I say that, is, if it were anyone but agents (of any level) they would already be in jail with charges pending. Either way it is still breaking and entering, assault with a deadly weapon and endangering the welfare of children.
This is why so many people think so badly of law enforcement, and these men were not even law enforcement, they were and are still bail bonds men.

Authorities sifting through acres of stolen items found in Missouri City

http://www.kansascity.com/637/story/1547750.html

Clay County authorities are searching and cataloging hundreds of items (that are believed to be stolen) that were found on a 2 acre stretch of property in Missouri City. This area is being called "The Home Depot of Stolen Property" by Sheriff Bob Boydston. Two adults and an 8 year old child live at the residence, the female was arrested on Tuesday, and the male suspect is still at large after fleeing when the police arrived. The child was taken into the custody of welfare workers. deputies had begun to enter the premises when they were informed that an three and a half foot python was inside. The deputies quickly vacated the interior of the house. Boydston states that the discovery of the stolen items, happened on Tuesday, after a call was made to report the firing of a gun at a dog. So far, the authorities have been busy sifting through vehicles, farm equipment, building materials, chain saws, and seven railroad containers. One of the railroad containers was filled with numerous boxes of unopened household appliances. Authorities have also found tools, clothes, refrigerators, and commercial ovens that are still in their protective wrapping.
Holly cow!! How in the heck did they manage to pull that off with no one being the wiser? When I first read this, I had to laugh. I know that it is not funny, but, it does have a comical side. How could these people of ever thought that they would not get caught and what were they going to do with it all? Save it for a rainy day?
I can't help but laugh when I read just how stupid people can be. They can get themselves into some of the most peculiar situations. It just amazes me sometimes. Well I am sure that all of the stolen vehicles will finally be returned. It may take some time to figure out where the rest of it goes and to which companies.

Bond set at $100,000 for teen charged in death of gardener

http://www.kansascity.com/842/story/1548542.html

19 year old Jill Conaghan was arrested this morning for the killing of Sandra Carocari, 70. Sandra was in her front yard, located in the 9800th block of 99th Terrace, at about 11:30 am. She was gardening when the vehicle that Jill was driving left the road and struck her, sending her across her yard. Sandara Carocari was pronounced dead at the scene.
Jill Conaghan was charged this morning, in Johnson County, with involuntary manslaughter, 3 counts of consumption of liquor by minor, drunk driving, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to stay in a traffic lane and driving on a sidewalk area. The Overland Park spokesman, Jim Weaver, stated that Jill was arrested on Tuesday after a complete and thorough investigation, but was not charged until today. Weaver also states that after Jill left the scene, she returned with her parents, who informed the officers that prescriptions were involved.
Oh my, how can someone that has had that much to drink even remotely begin to see enough to get into a vehicle, let alone drive. And was there no one around to stop her from getting behind that wheel? She obviously lives with her parents, or they were just conveniently close. So she had to come from somewhere like this. I can not believe that no one took this girls keys.
I feel angry about this article because this young girls life is over, when it should just be starting. Her life is ruined. It is all over a drink. A drink to fit in, a drink among friends, a drink to cope. She will now pay for this for the rest of her life. The family of the victim will pay for this for the rest of their lives. What is the point? I don't understand.
I am the daughter of an alcoholic, and I guess that seeing the things that I have seen alcohol lead to has always kept me from this sort of horrible possibility. It is saddening that a lesson of life had to be learned in this way.

Manslaughter charge filed in wake of hunting death

http://www.joplinglobe.com/local/local_story_306215708.html?start:int=0

A Granby man was charged Monday evening with First Degree Involuntary Manslaughter (a Class C Felony), for allegedly shooting and killing a teenager during a night time hunting accident. Jacob D. Shamblin,25, was arrested on Monday and taken into the custody of the Newton County Sheriffs Department. It is said that Shamblin, Cox, and Cox's brother in law, were all in the woods late that evening with the intentions of poaching. Cox, 19, was separated from the other two men. It is said that a running noise was heard and a flashlight was shown before Cox was shot. Steven Cox was shot in the face and died at the scene, (6646 Raven Road). It has been also noted that Steven Cox lived at the property address that was being hunted on. His dwelling consisted of a remade dog kennel, with limited access to water and electricity. Newton County's Prosecutor does not believe that it was an accident. It was stated that the distance between Shamblin and Cox was between 20-25 yards, and none of the three men were wearing a colored safety vest. Poaching charges are still on the table as a consideration at this time.
What were they thinking! We are hunters, and every hunter knows that you do not hunt when you cannot see and that you ALWAYS wear your hunters orange. Knowing that one of your friends is not with you and shooting at something that you cannot see makes absolutely no sense to me at all. His poor family, is all I can think of at this moment. I am trying not to think like a criminal justice major, but it is difficult when the stupidity of an event is obvious.
The reason that this article affected me in this manner is because I have children. And not only because I have children, but because I have children who like to hunt. What does this type of crime leave for the future hunters? What new restrictions are going to be put into force because of someones stupid streak. All that I can say is that god hope this was an accident. It will not make the lose easier on the parents of Steven Cox, but its better than knowing that this type of thing was done on purpose.
God protect all those who cannot protect themselves. The truth will come out in this case. May the investigations be through and justice be served.

Walmart starts selling coffins

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/8333198.stm

Walmart seems to sell just about everything that the average person needs on a day to day basis. They have just gone one step farther. Walmart is now catering to cradle-to-grave needs. They are now selling coffins! The prices range from "Mom" or "Dad Remembered" steel for $895 to a bronze model priced at $2,899. Not only can customers of this store plan ahead, but, now they can pay for their casket over a 12 month period with no interest.
Oh my god! Now we can die on a budget. Will they let me continue to pay for it after I am dead. Actually, what I should be asking is "is my credit good enough to die on a budget." Amazing! I am at a loss for words, and that does not happen often. This is absolutely funny to me. What on earth would lead Walmart (of all places) to sell coffins.
My feelings on this come from being a former employee. They offer so much to the consumer now, why go and add an item like this. It is so non-personal. I understand that these items are not cheap, but Walmart. Who is going to want to walk into this store and purchase the very thing that their bodies will spend eternity in. I would not want to have to make that decision inside of a Walmart super store. This type of planing takes caring and knowledge, neither of which will they get from an employee who wants to go to break or that is just having a bad day.
Life is to short for stupid.

Iraqi man accused of running down daughter

http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/10/30/arizona.iraqi.daughter/index.html

On Friday, authorities stated that an Iraqi man was taken into custody in an Atlanta airport after running down his 20 year old daughter and friend in Peoria (just outside of Phoenix), because she had become to "westernized". Almaleki drove his Jeep Cherokee into a parking lot and ran down his daughter and friend. After the incident he drove to Mexico to abandon his car. From there Almaleki made his way to Mexico City and boarded a plane to London. When he arrived in London, he was denied entry and sent back to the U.S., where he was picked up in Atlanta. In his statement to police Almaleki stated that he had ran down his daughter because she had become to westernized and was not living according to family tradition and value. Noor(the daughter) is in the hospital with life threatening injuries and is still unresponsive. Her friend, Khalaf, is also being treated for non-life threatening injuries and is in serious but stable condition. Almaleki is facing two counts of aggravated assault.
What the heck!! Is every one losing their minds. What on earth would posses a father to run down his daughter. I understand that they have their beliefs, but damn.
Who in their right mind would run down a child, I understand that she was not of adolescent age, but she is still his child. I know how their belief system works as far as being promiscuous, but there is nothing stating that she was. Besides, they are no longer in a country that is ok with killing a young woman for having pre-marital actions. I think that he needs some serious help. I hope that some day he can look back and realize that what he did was wrong. I understand that it is not in his beliefs but we, as parents, are supposed to protect our children, not try to kill them.

Search for sex offender leads to bodies

http://www.fox8.com/news/wjw-bodies-grave-in-home-txt,0,3291855.story

Cleveland now has a new face on their most wanted list. Anthony Sowell, is the new face. There is now a reward being offered for him in the amount of 12,000. Police officers arrived at Anthony's home on Thursday evening to sevre a warrant on an alleged attack of a woman last September. No one was home. When the officers enter the home they found two decomposing bodies located on the third floor and another in a recently dug shallow grave in the basement. No identification can be made of the victims at this time. There was also a video associated with this article, it shows the difference in judgmental character from different neighbors.
This article is disturbing. It's not just what was discovered, but, the reactions from his neighbors. The reporter in the interview on the video, interviewed a young woman who's mother is missing and fearing that she may be one of the three. This article makes me think about my own neighbors. I have good neighbors, or I think so anyways. But, after reading something like this, how do we really trust anyone. How do they trust us?
After reading this story, I have to sit and tell myself that we are all capable of wrong doings, but the difference is, most people are not evil in nature. An evil act will never be done by our hands. I do not understand how evil people become evil people, and when I read about them it scares me.

Illegal to Smoke at Home: Butt Out?

http://www.responsibilityproject.com/blog/post/illegal-to-smoke-at-home-butt-out/?src=keyword_s=ggl_K=IllegalSmoking_C=Law_G=IllegalToSmoke_Illegal_M=broad

This is not an article, it is a blog that was written by an elderly woman in California. It concerns smokers and their right to smoke in their homes. Belmont, California is now the home to the second most restrictive smoking law in America today. It states that it is now illegal to smoke inside of an apartment or condo. That is anything where your walls, ceiling, or floor touch another unit. It has also been put on the citizens shoulders to turn in their neighbors for doing so. There is also a fine with being caught smoking in any type of residents that is not free standing.
What the heck! I am a smoker and this really ticks me to no end. I mean what are they trying to prove here? They have already made us pay more money, not only to purchase them but also in taxes. Now they are trying, well not trying they are, to make them illegal. I can understand the consequences of second hand smoke and the worries about it. I am so sick of other people (the government) telling us that what we think and want. It is a freedom, last time I checked it was still legal, it is not illegal and they all need to stop.
I am so tired of our government lately. This new president of ours and his followers are going to leave us with some very large problems by the time that they are done. If it is not illegal, it will be an at of terrorism. We will all end up being persecuted for things that should never have been. I saw a vehicle today and on the back window was "No Bama, Vote no on G2, Vote for a Free America". This is what I am talking about. Where are we headed? What is next?

Police comb landfill to clues to Florida girl's death

http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/10/23/teen.jane.doe/index.html

Somer Thompson, 7 years old, disappeared on Friday from Orange Park, Florida. Witnesses stated that she was last seen walking on the sidewalk in front of an empty house that is being renovated due to a fire. The young girls body was found on Wednesday, 55 miles north of Orange Park in Folkston, Georgia. But she was not just found anywhere, her body was discovered inside of a landfill. Authorities are treating this investigation as a homicide. Detectives have interviewed 90 registered sex offenders and predators within a five mile radius of the Thompson home. This case may also be featured on "Americas Most Wanted" this Saturday.
This story makes my stomach curl. The thoughts that must be running through this families minds. And, the number of people who were not only talked to, but, had their homes searched, holly crap. That is a lot of individuals in a very small area. The article also did state that they do know how she was killed, but they are not going to release any details. For them not to release something is bad.
This whole story makes me want to hug my children tight. I could imagine the fear, but would never want to go through this type of devastation. All crimes are bad, these, are horrendous! It takes a very mentally sick individual to touch a child. I can only dare to imagine what the little girl went through. I hope that they catch whoever did this and fry them.
God protect our children, for they are trusting.

Baby Survivrs after falling under train

http://www.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/asiapcf/10/16/australia.baby.train.escape/index.html

A six month old boy, sitting in his stroller, rolled off of a railway platform Thursday and into the path of an oncoming train. This happened in Melbourne, Australia, and was filmed by a local t.v. station who just happened to be there. There is also video footage of this incident on this website if anyone wants to see it. I could not watch it. It is said that the mother let go of the stroller for just a brief second. The baby and the stroller were dragged 33 feet before the train came to a stop. The baby managed to only suffer a minor scratch to the forehead, other than that was completely unharmed by the incident.
Wow! Can you imagine the fear that that mother had to be feeling. I would have lost it. I can not even imagine going through something like having to watch my child being drug by a train. I think that I would have jumped in and tried to save my child, and in turn, would have probably made the whole situation much worse.
Someone was looking out for this child and his mother. It is truly a miracle. Wow!

Interracial Couple in Louisiana Denied Marriage License

http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/10/16/louisiana.interracial.marriage/index.html

Beth Humphrey, and her boyfriend, Terrence McKay, were denied a marriage license, due to their race, by a justice of the peace in New Orleans. The justice, Keith Bardwell, states that it is not the race difference that he has a problem with, it is the future children that he is worried about. He also stated that these types of marriages never last. Bardwells wife referred the couple to another justice of the peace, who did endorse their marriage license. They have since hired an attorney and the NAACP is also involved. They have since forwarded this case to the state and national level of the civil rights group. Bardwell was asked to resign.
How ignorant can one person get? He should have known that this was going to happen. Why would you even put your self in a position to become discriminant? I know that discrimination is still a big problem, but, to discriminate against someone who has not, and may never will be, thought of.
I can't believe that there are people who are still like this. I mean look at all of our children, it does not matter whether they are white, black, mixed, or even yellow, they are still children, they are our children.

Feds Sign Up Locals to Help Enforce Immigration

http://www.nytimes.com

On friday, the Department of Homeland Security announced that the Obama administration signed up 55 state and local enforcement agencies to help with the enforcement on immigration laws. Another 12 have been approved and are awaiting the local and state approval. Included in the agencies that signed up is Arizona's county sheriff Joe Arpaio, who is under investigation for racial profiling. The administration, had, previously suspended this program because it was said to have been mismanaged. Arpaio has been given permission to participate in this new agreement. He will not have all of the controls that he once was allowed.

I do not believe that he should be allowed to participate. Well, at least until there has been some closer to the current investigation that is against him. I do believe that there needs to be enforcement, actual enforcement in place and acted on. It does us no good to have the laws concerning this problem in place if there is no one that will enforce it and make it stick.

I do not have a problem with immigration itself, but, I do have a problem with illegal immigration. We are all held to certain laws that we must abide by, debts we are responsible for, and taxes we have to pay. Illegal immigrants do none of these things. If they want to live in our country, work in our country, and raise families in our country, then they ought to be here legally and be made to follow the same guidelines and rules that everyone else has too.

Wal-Mart worker suffers wound in theft case

http://www.joplinglobe.com/local/local_story_279012344.html

During an alleged shoplifting incident on Saturday evening, an employee of Walmart was injured. It was stated that two men were attempting to leave Walmart with a screwdriver set when they were confronted at the door. One of the assailants started a fight while the other took off on foot with the merchandise. One of the employees did give chase and was stabbed in the chest with a screwdriver in the process. Cpl. Chuck Neiss stated that both men did escape and that the injury suffered was superficial.

I am not quite sure what to think about this story. As a former Walmart employee myself, I know that employees are not aloud to follow someone out of the store. If they are not stopped within the store, then it is the job of the local police department. Also, it is the responsibility of the Asset protection personnel to stop and retain the suspect until law enforcement arrives to investigate.

There is room for comment at the bottom of this article in the Joplin Globe, It is said to be written by an actual witness to this whole scene, and states that the story posted in the paper is not accurate. This is what was commented:
Globe's story not accurate writes:
The funny thing about all of these comments is that this story is not accurate. I was a customer walking into the store at the time of the incident, and when the stock boys(plural) surrounded the thief's one of them pulled out a screwdriver, and threatened the stock boys. The stock boys backed off, but they had recovered the merchandise, so they were not losing anything. The 2 male shoplifters started to run across the parking lot, and the stock boys started chasing them again, after the criminals had already pulled out a weapon, and threatened them. One of the stock boys grabbed the man who had threatened him with the screwdriver, and the man stabbed the stock boy, and ran away. This is what really happened.

I'm not quite sure which way to go on this particular story. As I stated before, I was an employee of Walmart and know what their rules are and this does not fit within their guidlines.

Cleaning agent cited as possible source of smoke odor

http://www.joplinglobe.com/local/local_story_280234057.html

The Joplin Fire Department received a report of smoke in a building located in the Spring River Christian Village on Monday evening. Firefighters responded to the call at 8:55 p.m. and found no fire, but were able to smell a light smokey odor. The source of the odor was coming from some rags that were left on the floor in the utility room. It was stated that the rags had cleaning agents on them and is believed to be the source of the smokey odor.

I can tell you that all rags, used to clean with, must be rinsed. And I am sure that this is not something that we have not all heard before. Cleaning agents are strong, and potentially hazardous. When the rags, or what ever you have used, are not properly rinsed or discarded the chemicals left in the material can and will mix with other chemicals that are close by or heaven forbid, mixed into a pile.

We are all aware of what these products are made of. And the products that are used to clean the residences of the elderly are just as bad, if not more concentrated. People who work in the field of cleaning are trained to know the hazards of not properly rinsing and or disposing of the material and the cleaning agents in which they are used.

Sounds like someone needs to go back and retake the Hazmat training course.

Authorities: Boy’s father on mower at time of accident

http://www.joplinglobe.com/local/local_story_280233438.html

In Pittsburg Kansas on Monday, a 3 year old boy (
Jackson C. Chopra), was seriously injured after falling off of the lawn mower that he was riding on with his father and 5 year old sister. The father stated that he was giving the children a ride when Jackson fell off and his arm passed under the deck of the mower.

Why would you not let off of the gas as soon as the child started to fall? And, what were they doing on the mower to cause the child to fall in the first place?

I own a riding lawn mower, and my son rides with me, but, I make sure that he is seated safely before the machine is even engaged. I do not understand how this happened. In the mere thought that my child may be slipping, the movement would all come to a fast stop. We are all taught safety around mowers as young children, why would he allow what ever unsafe act, that caused his son to fall, even begin?

My prayers are with Jackson, may his tiny arm be ok.

Job Cuts Unexpectedly Accelerate

http:/online.wsj.com/article/SB125448660657759257.html

Last month it is said that the unemployment rate climbed to 9.8%. "Payrolls to non-farm employees declined by 263,000 in September alone," stated the Labor Department on Friday.

What the heck is going on? I thought that all of this was supposed to be over and signs of better times were on the way. Or, so that's what they keep telling us, right? I heard a comment on a movie preview the other night that actually seems kind of funny at this moment, it was - if the government tells you that everything is ok -- RUN! After reading this article, thinking about that statement made me chuckle.

It was noted by the Labor Department on Friday that the largest job losses were in construction, among a few others. I took this hard at the time of reading, for my boyfriend is in construction. And he just came home last week and told me that the company that he workd for is getting ready to start doing more layoffs. Great timing!! What does this say for those of us who are going into fields that are now diminishing? After we put ourselves into debt and study our butts off, are we going to have something to go to when we have finished?

For those of us that are non-traditional students, this is a scary thought.

28 Pregnant Woman Dead from H1N1

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,559062,00.html I am having a problem getting this site to allow me to copy the actual link, but here is the address.

During a briefing Thursday, U.S. health officials stated that "the virus has hit pregnant woman especially hard". The CDC has also stated that they are aware of 100 cases of pregnant woman in the U.S. that are or have been hospitalized for the virus, since late April. They also stated that out of those 100 woman, 28 have died. Dr. Manny Alvarez, head of maternal fetal medicine at Hackensack University Medical Center, in Hackensack N.J. stated "First, pregnant woman have an immune system that is slow - it's like their immune system is on standby - and it's not as reactive as a non-pregnant person's. And because of that, viruses, especially flu viruses of any sort can create a very severe infection". She (Dr. Alvarez) goes on to explain the other reasons and risk factors in this article.

My first thought when I read this article was "oh my god". I know that this is bad stuff, but, I guess that I had not thought about pregnant woman, as far as being affected.

I have had 4 children and had never thought about how much our bodies change during this time. It is mentioned in this that the second challenge to woman is the fact that as the child grows, inside of the womb, the anatomy of a woman chest changes. In the article, Dr. Alvarez states "Their whole respiratory volume changes, so if they get a second infection, such as pneumonia after the flu, it makes it very challenging and problematic for doctors to get airflow back into the lungs".

All I can say is may our prayers be with all of the 28 families, and to those who are still fighting.

New vaccineto fight against HIV

http://www.stjoenews.net/news/2009/sep/25/new-vaccine-fight-against-hiv/

According to Mitizi Teliczan, a health educator at the St. Joseph/Buchanan Health Department Aids and HIV are on the rise in Northwest Missouri. There is now some hope for the cure. In Thailand there has been research being done and untill now there had been no real signs of hope. Now there is. They are testing two preveously failed vaccines that seem to be working when mixed together. The hope of Mrs. Teliczan is that this vaccine will not only help to prevent contracting the strand that is now in Thailand, but hopfully help to prevent it here also.
I was unaware that there was more than one strain of HIV. I was under the assumption that HIV was HIV. I now know that I am wrong.
She has stated that the hope is that the strain in the U.S. is the same as the strain in Thailand. All that I can say is holly heck. This article I found very informative on the facts of how it is being tested and what the possible outlooks may be. This vaccine will not do anything to help those individuals whp are already infected but it may help those of us who are not. Along with the everyday practices of safe sex and such, if this indeed works - thaank god!
I hope that this works, this disease has been bad news from the very begining and for the hopes of protecting our children(who seem to be more active than we were at their age) I will keep my fingers crossed.

Student grazed by bullet at Southeast High

http://www.kctv5.com/news/21117899/detail.html

On friday afternoon at Southeast High in Kansas City, a 13 year old boy was grazed by a bullet due to the drive by shooting that was going on outside on the street. Two cars were passing by the school when one opened fire on the family inside the car next to them. The family then turned into the high school to try and seek safety from the shooter.
If you are being shot at, I can understand wanting to get away from the person or people firing at you, but pull into a school? Why? Knowing that there are children right there, why would you do that? I guess that I do not understand why there, but I was not in that vehicle so I can not posibly understand the reasoning behind it.
I understand that this sort of thing is not new news, but it still just really ticks me off. They are fighting so hard on gun control and the people who seem to not be affected are the ones that need them taken away. Those of us that are law abiding citizens need to be able to protect ourselves and our families from people like this.
I think that harsher punishment for joyride shooting needs to be not only put into place but strickly enforced!

Man shot by invaders who demanded money

http://www.kctv5.com/news/21117272/detail.html

In Leavenworth Kansas sometime early on friday morning a mother (Amber Taylor) and her 3 year old daughter were awaked by the sound of gunshots. Three men had broke into their home demanding money from the boyfriend of Amber. In between gunshots the boyfriend managed to push the button on the alarm and the men ran out.
I know that this situation was indeed a scary one, exspecially for a three year old child, but, they have focused on the fear of he woman in this story with no comments on how the man is doing who was shot twice.
Things like this happen all of the time, and fewer and fewer are reported on in the papers. We have become so used to hearing about this sort of thing that noone pays much attention anymore to the feelings of the victims. I think that in this case they should have given more information on the victim that was shot. People are naturally curious and are going to want to know if her survived.
I would liked to have seen some more information on the boyfriend. I am sorry for the child and the mother needs to understand that there is no one type of people in which this sort of thing happens to. Not knowing or hanging around the wrong type of people will not allways protect you.

Missouri records 2nd swine flu death

http://www.joplinglobe.com/local/local_story_261090044.html

A 24 year old woman died Wednesday night in Independence Missouri after being hospitalized with symptoms (diarrhea, coughing and extreme fatigue) of the swine flu. They have not released her name. The department of health stated that the woman had no pre-existing medical conditions which has been the case with many of the deaths caused by the swine flu.

If this flu is spread like any other flu than how is it that there is only one person here or there that is coming down with this flu? I think that there is more that is not being said. When one person gets the flu the chances of them spreading it to atleast one person is 100%. So how can we really believe that there is only one.

So far, that I know of , there has been this one, one in Jasper, one in St. Louis and one in this end of Kansas. But then again we are only hearing about the ones that die. They are not telling us what the actual numbers are. I don't know about you but I don't like not knowing. How can we truly protect ourselves and our children if we are not aware of all the facts.

Teen alleges discrimination by retail giant

http://www.joplinglobe.com/local/local_story_261101010.html?keyword=secondarystory

In Tulsa, a 17 year old muslim girl walked into Abercrombie & Fitch to apply for a job. An attourney for the EEOC filed a lawsuit on Wednesday because Samantha Elauf (the girl) states that "the manager told her that her headscarf (hijab) violates the store's "look policy."" A spokeswoman that works for the store would give no comment on the alligations because she says that they have a strong equal employment policy and that they try to make accomodations for different religious practices.

I think that this war has everybody shaken. Nobody trusts anybody anymore. And after 9/11 this religious group has been getting the blunt of our discrimination. I understand that people are angry and that they think that it is ok to act this way but it is not. What part could this young girl have played to deserve this? None. I know that this company stated they they make accomodations but the accomodations they seem to be making are based on their predilection.

This really upsets me, I mean, I am Irish/German, what happens if one of those countries upsets America do I suffer for it? Do my children? I think that we all need to focus our resentments at the right end of the people, the ones who are actually involved, not at the ones (who because they have the same faith) have done nothing. There are many muslims in the U.S., most of which had nothing to do wiyh 9/11, so why treat them as if they did.

Sunday school teacher to face death

http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/09/10/huckaby.death.penalty/index.html

Prosecuters are going to ask for the death penality( in September) against Melissa Huckaby, a 28 year old sunday school teacher who is being charged with kidnapping, murder, lewd and lascivious acts on a child under 14 and rape by instrument. The child was 6 year old Sandra Cantu who was found stuffed in Huckabys suitcase and submerged in a pond.

This story makes my skin crawl. There are certain things that come to mind (when I read about children and the things that have been done to them) and I hope that god has his earplugs in! How can the parent of a child hurt another child like that, how can anyone hurt a child.

IAAF urges caution over Semenya intersex claims

http://www.cnn.com/2009/SPORT/09/11/athletics.semenya.gender.iaaf/index.html

South Africas gold medal winner is under investigation for the rumors that she is a hermaphrodite. There has been talk of banning her from further competition, and also some brief thought on stripping her gold medal that she won in Berlin. The humiliating string of tests were started back in 1991 and are still not conclusive today.

My reaction to this article was "who has the right do invade someone privacy for a medical condition, exspecially one they they may or may not have been born with. And instead of smearing her around the world, causing embarasment to her, her family, and her country, why not just ask her how she feels or what she thinks. This is so typical of people in the spotlight, they have absolutely no privacy. Things are meant to be personal (that we would consider very personal) is open news to the reporters and therefore the world. It is not right.

It's in the bag!!

http://gadgetwise.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/09/02/news-item/?ref=technology

How do we carry our laptops without people seeing what we are carrying? Well, http://www.mitemite.es/ (Mitemite Unnecessary Objects Lab) has figured it out. They have developed a bag strictely for the laptop that looks like you are carrying a simple newspaper.

How cool is that. I dont know that we all want to go around with what looks like a newspaper under our arms, but some of us might.

I like anything that will make me laugh and it is said that the company “specializes in creating products which will spread a few more chuckles in a somewhat mundane reality.”

Ok, well maybe I just want to walk around with a newspaper that is a different language, that nobody can read.

plastic surgery and migraines

The article on migraine relief that I found is at http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/03/fashion/03SKIN.html?ref=health. This article involves the study and research being done on the fact that plastic surgery may relieve migraine pain. There are three main locations in which most migraine triggers start. There are certain migraine sufferers that qualify for this procedure and even more that do not.

This article really interested me at first. I am one in the millions of people that suffer from migraines, but after reading further into this article, realized that this research and/or the proedure of wouold not help me in the slightest. The thought of being able to relieve some if not all of the pain is a fantastic thought to me, but one of my trigger spots is the eyes and i am sorry but there will be no plastic surgery for me and my eyes.

The thought of this actually working is wonderful, and I think that anyone who suffers from these headaches would agree, but, the risks are high and the relief may not have long lasting relief if any at all.

Please pass the excederin migraine!

Beware of home DNA tests

I found this story in the New York times. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/01/health/01brod.html?_r=1&ref=health The soul purpose of this article is to make the readers aware of the miconceived conception that at home DNA tests are 100% reliable, they are not.

I have a hard time grasping that people would be so neglectful to themselves because a piece of paper says that there is no need to worry. If I was told that there was no genetic history, in my family, of lung cancer, would I allow myself an extra pack of cigerettes a day? Well no!

Just because you spit onto a piece of plastic and send it off to a lab and they send you back your genetic history, does not mean that you are safe. There are alot of people in this world with diseases that do not run in the family history. Maybe they are the first in what will become a long line of problems. Maybe not, it is possible for one person in an entire hisory of family related wellness or sickness to be different.

Everyone is different, whether your are related or not.

creating my blog

I am sitting here, in my mothers house, doing homework and feel like a teenager again. I have not done homework in front of my mother in well, im not going to say how long, but it has been a long time. My computer decided to go on the fritz two days before class and i am pretty sure that my children now what happened but nobody is talking. Lol!

The course schedule stated that we just needed to set up our blogs, so I am hoping that this is what was wanted.
